What a sump pump job has to include, before you compare prices
Here is what this page does not do: it does not tell you what a sump pump installation costs. We looked hard for a defensible way to publish that figure and concluded there is not one. Installed pricing is dominated by which of the items below actually apply to your basement, and by local labour rates, and any national average would carry an authority it has not earned. A made-up cost anchor is worse than a missing one, because you would plan around it.
What a calculator can honestly do is derive the scope — the specific line items your situation requires — so that when a quote arrives you can see what is missing from it. A low quote is usually not a bargain; it is usually a quote for a smaller job than the one your house needs, and the difference surfaces on the day as a change order.

What this scope deliberately excludes
- Any dollar figure. We do not publish an installed-price average, because sump pump pricing is set by which of these lines apply and by local labour rates, and a national number would look authoritative without being true for you.
- Foundation drainage repair, regrading, and downspout work, which are separate projects that frequently make the pump smaller.
- Interior waterproofing systems, which are a different scope with different economics.
Questions to put to whoever quotes it
- Which pump model, and what flow does its published curve show at the total head this site derived for my discharge?
- Is "enlarge or replace the existing basin" included, and on which line?
- Is "check valve on the discharge" included, and on which line?
- Is "upsize the discharge pipe" included, and on which line?
- Is "trace where the discharge actually terminates" included, and on which line?
- Is "freeze protection at the discharge termination" included, and on which line?
- Does this scope need a permit or inspection at my address, and who pulls it?
- What is the warranty on the pump, and separately on the labour?
The first question is the one that separates a competent quote from a guess. Anybody can name a pump; being able to state its flow at your head, from the manufacturer's own curve, means the person has actually thought about your discharge line rather than about their van stock.
Why there is no dollar figure on this page
Sump pump installed pricing is dominated by what has to change around the pump — pit condition, discharge routing, whether an electrician is needed — and by local labor rates. A national average would be a number we made feel authoritative without it being true for you. We ask for your quote and check its structure instead.
This is a general rule across the site rather than a gap here. Where we hold a figure, it is labelled sourced, derived, or assumed, and you can see the label. Where we do not hold one, we say so and ask for yours. There is no third category where a plausible-looking number appears without provenance.
If it helps: the useful comparison is not your quote against a national average, it is your quote against the scope above, and your quote against two other quotes for the same scope. A number from a stranger on the internet cannot do either of those jobs.
The order the work should happen in
- Find where the discharge goes before anything else. It constrains the route, and occasionally it turns out to be somewhere the current rules do not permit, which changes the job.
- Fix the basin if it needs fixing. It is the only item on the list that requires breaking concrete, and everything else is easier once it is done.
- Run the electrical next, while the floor is open and before the pump is in the way.
- Set the pump and the discharge, with the check valve at a height you can actually reach to service.
- Add the backup and the alarm last, and test both before anybody leaves.
That sequence is not fussiness. Doing the electrical after the pump is set means working around it; discovering the discharge problem after the concrete is poured means doing part of the job twice.
